I stood in my covert spot near the stuffed toy isle, watching May as she rang up a mother-daughter pair. May smiled to all the customers with genuine affection, and always with a little twinkle in her eye. God, I wanted her to smile at me like that. We went to school together. We worked together. But we never talked. At least, we never talked more than a casual hello. Which was a shame. because her voice had a special lilt to it that made my heart thump a little faster every time I heard it.

The lamp was not as she left it. Instead of the cozy apartment with red brick walls and creaky wooden floors, Alessia stood on a disc that floated in space. The sun blazed far out ahead of her, and the moon danced behind her. The disc itself had been cut from a strange golden marble and polished so much that Alessia could see her reflection.

Anna had never experienced a rush like the first time she left the lamp. Her Master’s command to leave set off a complicated dance of pink light and chaotic energy. Her body reformed for her, facing Anna to her Master. That word flashed through her mind as she saw the man in front of her. He was young and wore poorly fitting clothes and kept his hair fashionably unfashioned. Anna the Human might have asked his name, and how his day had gone. But Anna wasn't human right now. She was a Genie. And her Master held the lamp.
